Beginners Guide to Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

Updated: Apr 14, 2023

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the visibility and ranking of your website on search engine results pages (SERPs) to increase organic traffic. In other words, it is the practice of optimizing your website to make it more attractive to search engines and improve its ranking.

Getting Started with Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

Here are some steps you can take to optimize your website for SEO:

Step #1: Research keywords

The first step in optimizing your website for SEO is to research the keywords your target audience is searching for. Use keyword research tools like Google Keyword Planner, SEMrush, or Ahrefs to find keywords that are relevant to your business.

Google's Keyword Planner is available when you register for Google Ads (Adwords). But you don't have to spend money with Google to use the Keyword Planner.
Step #2: On-page optimization

Once you have identified the keywords, optimize your website's pages by using them in the page title, meta description, header tags, and content. Ensure that the content is high-quality and relevant to the keyword. Be careful not to "stuff" too many keywords into the page - focus on a good user experience e.g. a useful, well-structured article. "Keyword Stuffing" will dramatically reduce the chances of your website performing well.

Step #3: Improve website speed

Google considers website speed as one of the ranking factors. Make sure your website loads quickly on both desktop and mobile devices. You can use tools like GTmetrix or Google's PageSpeed Insights to analyze your website speed and get recommendations to improve it.

Step #4: Build high-quality backlinks

Backlinks are links from other websites to your website. Having high-quality backlinks is important for improving your website's ranking. You can build backlinks by guest blogging, broken link building, or creating linkable assets like infographics, guides, or research papers.

Beginners should steer well clear of link farms or paid for directories claiming to improve your SEO. We also recommend reviewing "black hat SEO what to avoid". These sorts of techniques will cause more harm than good and possibly get your website removed from Google. Be Careful

Step #5: Create a mobile-friendly website

With the increasing number of mobile users, having a mobile-friendly website is essential. Google has also started prioritizing mobile-first indexing, which means the mobile version of your website is considered the primary version for ranking.

Step #6: Use local SEO

If you have a brick-and-mortar store, using local SEO techniques like creating a Google My Business listing, getting listed in local directories, and optimizing your website for location-based keywords can help improve your visibility in local search results.

Step #7: Monitor your progress

Use tools like Google Analytics or SEMrush to track your website's traffic, ranking, and other important metrics. Monitor your progress regularly and make necessary changes to your strategy.

Be Patient. SEO can take a 6-12 months to show any meaningful traffic or improvement in rankings. But it is worth the wait...

Conclusion: Is SEO right for my business?

Almost certainly YES!!! SEO is a crucial part of any digital marketing strategy. By following the steps mentioned above, you can optimize your website for SEO and improve your ranking on search engine results pages.
